Virtues of International Solidarity

The nefarious effects of the pangs of terrorism on the socio-economic life of nations are living no one indifferent. Yesterday, January 09, at the State House, President Paul Biya while receiving New Year wishes from members of the diplomatic corps found it necessary to remind the international community of the danger hanging in the air if the nodes of international collaboration are not well tightened in the fight against terrorism. From every indication, there couldn't have been any better way of saying it considering the persistence with which terrorists acts are sending their roots into the ground. As rightly stated by the Head of State, all that it takes to fight such an ill seems to have been put in place by the international community, but the challenge remains. " If the fight against terrorism is successful in Syria and Iraq, it is to be feared that, in the absence of genuine and sincere solidarity between states, this scourge will spread and intensify in other parts of the world. I am thinking in particular of Africa and especially the Sahelian zone where Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad are already affected."

The tentacles of terrorism have for several years manifested themselves in Cameroon through the outburst and persistence of the Boko Haram sect leading to several thousand deaths. Cameroon and its neighbours of the Lake Chad basin as well as other international partners of goodwill have spared no effort to fight and terminate the existence of the dangerous sect. " Cameroon, for its part, is combining its efforts with all the neighbouring countries of the Lake Chad basin and international partners of good will to neutralize the nuisance capacity of the Boko Haram sect", President Biya assured. In effect, since 2012 when the first incursion of the Boko Haram Islamist sect was reported in Cameroon, the country has taken waves and waves of security measures epitomising in the declaration of war against Boko Haram, in August 2014.
