Laudable Media Breakthrough

The media landscape in Cameroon has for the past few years witnessed a plethora of political emancipation epitomized by a medley of debates threading through key socio-political and economic life of the nation. Notwithstanding the various interpretations this dispensation might have ignited in many a Cameroonian, what remains clear is the ability of political actors to diversify their actions in their bid to participate in nation building. The invasion of media platforms and the massive participation in opinionated debates tells of the evolution of some components of the country’s democracy. We are talking here about the famous freedom of speech. Needless to remind the important role a free press plays in a democratic process. It is known to be an indispensible purveyor of information and opinions among ordinary citizens, businesses, citizen associations, political parties, and governments.
The offshoot of several opinion and debate programmes on the country’s diverse national media organs: television, radio, newspapers and even the social media is something worthy of praise. The reason is simply, for once, the media are demonstrating beyond reasonable doubt the part they can play in shaping opinions and providing platforms for politicians and other nation builders to unravel their programmes to their fellow Cameroonians. The choice of the media for action tells of the fact that politics is not only a thing of the street. The mass media have the advantage that it reaches the greater majority of the population.
