Group E : Cameroon Eying First Trophy

The Intermediate Lions will play the first match in the group against Congo on January 16, 2023 in Oran.

Group E in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations is one of the two groups with only three teams. The group is made up of Cameroon, Congo and Niger. The group is particular and the format unlike the others. In this group, only the first team will qualify for the next round of the competition. The Intermediate Lions of Cameroon will be participating in the competition for the fifth time. The Lions are considered to be favourites in group E.  The Intermediate Lions will play the first match in the group against Congo on January 16, 2023 in Oran.
Arguably the most successful football nation in Central Africa, Cameroon eliminated Equatorial Guinea to reach the finals of the tournament. Cameroon only entered the race in the second round. In the away leg they drew 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea but the qualified at home in Garoua two weeks later thanks to goals from Marou Souaibou and Kaiba Djawal of Coton Sport of Garoua. Coach Alioum Saidou will be counting on the skills of the center forward of New Stars of Douala, Junior Kemajou in the absence of the top scorer of the local championship, Patient Wassou who was not selected. Also, the experience of 2018 duo Eta Bawak Thomas and Martial Zemba Ikoung plus Valentin Beo Batto who featured in the last edition in Cameroon in 2021. Cameroon has taken part in all but two editions. Cameroon will play their first match against Congo on January 16, 2023 at the Olympic Stadium in Oran.
