Nigeria’s President-elect Bola Tinubu is a veteran politician who has engraved his name in the annals of his country’s development strata after putting Lagos on the rail of economic development while at the helm of the state as Governor. Though for decades he paraded decision making corridors behind the scene, this time around he has been propelled to the forefront. Without any time to waste, he and his team have to get down to work because of the urgency of the files at hand. For him to move fast and surely, he must not wait for his inauguration on May 29, 2023. From the results, where he won 12 of the country’s 36 states and lost the capital, Abuja, and his home base of Lagos, it is clear that Bola Tinubu cannot fully succeed in his mission without extending a hand for expertise from both opposition and the civil society.
Whether the expertise comes from Christians or Muslims, what Nigerians want to see is a broad-based government capable of getting the struggling Nigeria’s economy which has had two recessions in five years. Partly due to policy missteps and the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. Solutions to cash and fuel shortages that have caused nationwide anger in the weeks leading up to the election should be a major priority. It is true that the incumbent President did extend the deadline for the exchange of bank notes to April 10, but the deadline is not comfortable enough considering the vast nature of the country and its numerous communication problems. The new administration while thinking on how to deal with rampant insecurity across almost all six of its geopolitical zones, should ease the flow of cash which has gripped the economy.
