Hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Algeria, Gambia and Tanzania have parted ways their coaches.
The ongoing Africa Cup of Nations has witnessed a shocking wave of coaching casualties midway through the tournament, with heads rolling in Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Algeria, Tanzania, and The Gambia.
Hosts Côte d'Ivoire, reeling from an embarrassing 0-4 thrashing by Equatorial Guinea, took swift action yesterday January 24, 2024, sacking coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his deputy Ghislain Printant for "insufficient results”. Stepping into the interim role is deputy trainer Emerse Fae, pending the opening of a procedure to recruit a new coach for the national team.
Chris Hughton’s tenure as Ghana coach has come to an end. The Ghanaian Football Association parted ways with the gaffer due to the Black Stars' disastrous group stage performance which resulted to their pre-mature elimination in the competition. “The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars,” said the statement announcing Chris Hughton’s firing. “The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” it added.
The Algerian football federation has equally parted ways with Djamel Belmadi following the country’s early elimination. “I met national team coach Djamel Belmadi to discuss the implications of this bitter elimination, and we came to an amicable agreement to end our relationship and to terminate his contract,” Algerian Football Federation President Walid Sadi posted on X.
