Transplanting Human Biological Material : Government Champions Legal Framework

Within the framework of improve the legal framework on innovative medical procedure in Cameroon, especially as it concerns the transplant of human biological material, the Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachi was before the Cultural, Social and Family Affairs Committee of the Senate on July 4, 2025 to explain the pertinence of such a document. Indeed, the proposed legal instrument institution lays down the conditions for the donation, removal and transplantation of human biological material in Cameroon.  Deliberations took place in the presence of the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Relations with Assemblies, Bolvine Wakata.  
The Minister of Public Health began by explaining to Senators that organ removal and transplantation is a procedure where the original organ is replaced by another, usually from a donor, in the case where the original is damaged due to health reasons or an accident. He defined organ or tissue removal and transplantation to be medical procedures involving the removal of an organ or tissue, known as a “graft” from a healthy person (the donor) and its placement in a sick person (the recipient), in other to replace a damaged or missing organ or tissue. With Cameroon currently experiencing a surge in organ removal and transplantation, especially amongst patients with kidney failures, the Minister stated that the putting in place of such a legal instrument guides legal guidance as to how the exercise will be carried out.
