2025 Men’s AfroBasket : Lions Honing Skills

With barely over a week until the start of the 2025 Men’s AfroBasket Championship in Luanda, Angola, the Basketball Lions of Cameroon are leaving no stone unturned in their preparation. Their camp in Istanbul, Türkiye, has been highly animated with intense training sessions and friendly matches to test the team's strengths and weaknesses. On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the team played their second friendly against Mali. This time, Mali got its revenge, winning 78-72. This was a contrast to the first friendly played on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, where Cameroon won Mali 80-64. An analysis of both matches suggests the Malian team has progressed, while the Cameroonians will need to put in more effort if they want to produce a stellar performance in the competition starting on August 12.
The technical staff, led by Coach Alfred Aboya, should have already identified the weaknesses of his squad and is putting strategies in place to correct them. The Cameroonian team understands the weight that lies on them, as they have the daunting task of doing better than the silver medal they obtained in Angola in 2007.
