Cameroon-Nigeria: Mutualising Efforts Against Insecurity

A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed yesterday June 16, 2026 by Minister Joseph Beti Assomo and his Nigerian counterpart, General Christopher Musa.
Within the framework of better addressing security challenges faced by Cameroon and Nigeria, particularly along its borders, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed yesterday June 16, 2026 at the Ministry of Defence. The Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Betti Assomo signed on behalf of Cameroon while his Nigerian counterpart, General Christopher Musa endorsed for his country. The ceremony took place in the presence of several government authorities, amongst them the Minister of External Relations, Mbella Mbella, Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, Nigerian High Commissioner to Cameroon and several security officials. The agreement provides the framework for military operations within strategic border area of the two countries, encompassing the North West and South West Regions on the Cameroon side. According to Minister Joseph Beti Assomo, the accord shows the importance with which the two Presidents (Paul Biya and Bola Ahmed Tinubu) attach to inter-African cooperation and to the strengthening of security bonds. Faced with security challenges, both countries have mobilised efforts within dedicated international bodies to eradicate these security threats notably the framework of the Lake Chad Basin Commission through the Multinational Joint Task Force in the fight against Boko Haram and affiliated groups. According to Minister Joseph Betti Assomo therefore, the signing of the agreement represents a significant milestone in the process of strengthening relations and military cooperation between the two countries. “It offers a valuable opportunity to consolidate existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms in the northern zone implemented by the Trans- Border Security Committee established on 28 February 2012 in Abuja as part of the fight against Boko Haram. It will also make it possible to extend this initiative to the southern zone, giving fresh impetus to the coordinated management of our common challenges,” he explained. To the Nigerian Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, the agreement establishes a robust mechanism for the fight against insecurity and enhanced intelligence sharing against a common enemy. Content of MoU The Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Cameroon and the Federal Republic of Nigeria is on securing the southern borders. There is already an existing agreement on the northern borders. Cameroon and Nigeria are two neighbouring States sharing more than 2,000 kilometres of common border and are both confronted with a number of security threats, including maritime piracy, illicit trafficking, and illegal fishing in the Gulf of Guinea, as well as the activities of armed terrorist groups.
