Voter Registration: Special Campaign Targets Indigenous People

A s August 31 draws clo­ ser, deadline for the close of voter regis­ tration in accordance with section 74 of the Electoral Code, officials of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) have special campaigns in view which will officially kick-off in the days ahead. Amongst the strategies, is a special campaign that targets indi­ genous people across several communities. A slogan has been selected for the ope­ ration; “Every community has its place in democratic life.” Cameroon Tribune learnt that the approach seeks to pro­ mote inclusive participation in electoral operations, by leaving no one behind in the process for the choosing of leaders through the ballot box. This especially, as le­ gislative and municipal elec­ tions are in view, elections which are a direct universal suffrage. The objective is also to harness the demo­ cratic process in the country and encourage citizenship. On the social media platforms of the elections management body, there are visuals that show ELECAM officials regis­ tering members of an indi­ genous community. This un­ doubtedly reflects the insti­ tution's effort of bringing vo­ ter registration services clo­ ser to people who often live far from municipal offices or have limited access to admi­ nistrative procedures. In ad­ dition, their daily activities which are basically farming and fishing keep them a little far from the registration pro­ cess.
