Archbishop Of Canterbury In Cameroon: Dame Sarah Mullally Visits Lekié Parishioners, Meets PM

Her Grace the Most Reverend Dame Sarah Mullally, the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, on Monday, August 3, 2026 engaged in high-level diplomatic, ecumenical, and pastoral outreach across the Centre Region of Cameroon. The prelate’s audience in the political capital follows a multi-city pastoral leg that took her through Douala, Buea and Limbe over the weekend.

Welcomed By MINAT

Her Grace was welcomed back to Yaounde from her trip to Douala and the South West Region by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, representing the Head of State, His Excellency President Paul Biya. She subsequently held official talks with Prime Minister Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute and visited parishioners in Lekie Division.

Outreach To Rural Lekié

Beyond diplomatic halls, the Archbishop’s itinerary prioritized direct contact with grassroots communities. Archbishop Sarah Mullally paid a visit to an orphanage in Nkolondom before traveling into the rural interior of the Lekié Division in the Centre Region. Navigating a challenging, dusty stretch of road, Her Grace visited Saint-Thérèse Anglican Parish in the locality of Yégassi, near Okola in Lekie Division of the Centre Region. She was accompanied by the Right Reverend Dibo Thomas-Babyngton Elango, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Cameroon. Along with local clergy and worshippers, she was welcomed by the rhythmic beating of traditional drums.

Improved Livelihoods

Saint-Thérèse Anglican Parish, Yégassi, created 26 years ago in an area previously struggling with severe poverty and alcohol abuse, stands as a practical model of holistic mission work. The Anglican Church helped organize and empower local believers to improve cocoa production and stabilize family livelihoods, exemplifying what the Archbishop described as "faith in action." The visit to Yégassi therefore underscored the Anglican Church’s ongoing commitment to poverty alleviation, peacebuilding, and rural development in Cameroon.

Heart Of Every Community

Addressing the congregation at Yégassi, Her Grace reflected: "It is a great joy for me to be here in this rural part of Cameroon. It reminds me that the church is at the heart of every community. They believe with great faith that we must not simply ask God to give us our daily bread, but also spiritual fruits - fruits like cocoa. It is a humbling lesson showing that we must believe in God even in suffering. My message is therefore that we must remain strong, united in the community, and preach the gospel not only through words, but also through actions," she said.

"God is here in the wrestling as well as in the blessing, and in encouragement to stand firm, to stand in their community, to offer the gospel that gives life, not just in word, but indeed," Archbishop Mullally noted.

Later in the day during discussions with Prime Minister Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, Archbishop Mullally expressed her gratitude to the Cameroonian government for their warm hospitality and highlighted the global vision of the Anglican Church:
