Douala-Bafoussam Road: For Efficient, Speedy Reconstruction!

T here is hope in the horizon that huge mountains of challenges encountered by travellers on the Douala- Bafoussam road would be surmounted in the coming months or years. The announcement made a few weeks ago that government has secured a FCFA 139.2 billion loan from the Islamic Development Bank to rehabilitate the 218.9 km long National Road N°5 ignited expectancy in the commuters and neighbouring localities along the road course for better days ahead. Clearly so given the suffering they endure plying the strategic highway. As a matter of fact, the vital economic corridor linking Ca meroon’s economic capital and the national and sub- regional breadbasket, the West Region, is reportedly in an advanced state of degradation. Massive potholes are said to have flooded the path, causing frequent vehicle break down and accidents which unavoidably lead to interminable congestion along the road. Evidently, such a scenario lengthens travel time and increases the cost of movement. It is even said that the deplorable state of the road pushes some drivers to opt, out of desperation, for another already bad stretch, Douala-Yaounde before heading to Bafoussam. How much time and money such a movement takes, are other burdens borne solely by the helpless tra vellers. This is certainly why the October 13, 2026 news from Bangkok, Thailand that Cameroon’s Minister of the Eco nomy, Planning and Regional Deve lopment, Alamine Ousmane Mey, and Dr Muhammad Su laiman Al Jasser, President of the Islamic Development Bank Group, had signed a loan agreement to completely overhaul the road got many off their seats. The countdown is certainly on course as hopes heighten among beneficiary population on when the nightmares would be history. Le gitimately so given the place a good road occupies in so cio-economic development, especially one as strategic as the Douala-Bafoussam stretch. The loan agreement, worth 212.35 million Euros (about FCFA139.2 billion) intended to finance the Douala–Ba foussam Road Rehabilitation Project represents about 92 per cent of the total cost. Encouraging indeed as the amount constitutes a lion’s share of the overall budget! According to the press release issued following the loan- signing ceremony, the project to rehabilitate the Douala- Bafoussam road forms part of the implementation of Ca meroon’s National Development Strategy 2020–2030. Target is to improve the movement of people and goods between the cities of Douala (Littoral Region) and Ba foussam (West Region), a road considered a strategic highway for economic activity in Cameroon and the central African sub-region. In effect, no one doubts the fact that the development of the road will greatly contribute to im proving the flow of transport and facilitate the distribution of produce from the Western agricultural basin to Cameroon’s main consumer centres and to neighbouring countries. Roads are growth purveyors, more so the one under consideration! Details of the much-awaited rehabilitation works indicate that the project will be executed in modules. Component 1 comprises the rehabilitation of the Bekoko Interchange- Nkam Bridge-Bandjoun Interchange section; the construction of the extension of the Douala Western Bypass as a dual carriageway over a distance of approximately 5 km; and the rectification of critical points identified on the existing bypass. Meanwhile, Component II, entails paving the Ba tié-Bamendjou-Bameka-Bafoussam and Bameka-Bansoa- Inter R0606 roads, the tarring of the Bafang-Nkondjock road, and the pavement of the Loum-Tombel-Kumba road. The construction of socio-economic infrastructure designed to support the road investment projects and maximise their benefits for local communities are also envisaged. All-encompassing works that are expected at term to give the road a facelift. Encouraging indeed! As the beneficiary population celebrate this milestone in securing a substantial funding for the hope-raising project, gove...
