Independence Days: Cameroon-Nigeria Ties Celebrated

Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary was marked in Douala with renewed calls for stronger relations, unity and peaceful coexistence.

T he Nigerian community in Douala has celebrated the country’s 66th Indepen­ dence anniversary, high­ lighting Nigeria’s resilience, diversity and contribution to peace, regional integration and development in Africa. Commemorated every Octo­ ber 1, this year’s edition took place on October 4 in Douala. Speaking during the celebration in Douala, the consul general of Nigeria in Douala, Ambassador Francis Enya, said the anniversary was an op­ portunity to honour the sacrifices of the country’s founding leaders while reflecting on its achievements, challenges and prospects. He noted that Nigeria had made significant progress in areas including educa­ tion, human capital development, agriculture, economic growth, in­ frastructure, digital development and job creation. He also stressed Nigeria’s continued commitment to peacekeeping and conflict resolution on the continent. He took time off to appreciate the longstanding relationship between Cameroon and Nigeria, describing it as historic, strategic and deeply rooted in geography, culture, trade and people to people relations. The diplomat said cooperation bet­ ween the two countries extended beyond political and diplomatic en­ gagement to areas such as security, transportation, education, culture and consular affairs. He stressed the need for sustained cooperation in addressing insecurity, terrorism and violent extremism, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin. Economic relations were also highlighted, as he pointed at cross-border trade and the movement of people and goods as important components of the two countries’ interconnected economies.
