Sustainable Forest Management: JICA To Strengthen Project Capacities

It seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions emanating from agricultural and forestry activities.

A Japanese-backed scheme known as “Project to strengthen capacities for the sustainable management of forest ecosystems in Cameroon” has gone operational. The project to be run by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was launched during a workshop in Yaounde, Wednesday January 30, 2019. The project was officially set into motion by the Minister of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development, Hele Pierre, in the presence of the Japanese Ambassador to Cameroon, Tsutomu Osawa.

Officials said Cameroon engaged the project in order to increase its efforts in the fight against climate change through the conservation of biodiversity and reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). After several negotiations, a convention for collaboration (Record of Discussions) was signed on November 8, 2017, between the governments of Japan and Cameroon, which has given way to the project.
