Football fans from across the world will be converging on Cameroon as from 9 January, 2022 to watch good talents who ply their trade on the continent and beyond. The competition is taking place after the country took the commitment some years back to host the event in grand style. Repeated promises by the Head of State, President Paul Biya to provide the required infrastructure for the competition have often been met with scepticism or even derision from certain quotas. Such reservations failed to take into account the resolve of a people to defend their national pride. 
With all details cleared for the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to hold from 9 January to 6 February, 2022 in six sites based in five out of the ten regions of Cameroon the transformation that has taken place is undisputable today. Ultra-modern sports facilities now do exist in all the sites with Olembe in Yaounde and Japoma in Doula standing out tall as world-class stadiums freshly provided to serve football and other sporting activities in Cameroon and the world. The Head of State could not have been more explicit in his end-of-year address to the nation on 31 December, 2021 when talking about the upcoming football jamboree. Thus, President Paul Biya pointed out that: “We are faced with specific challenges at the dawn of the New Year. Our country will host the Africa Cup of Nations from 9 January to 6 February 2022. In the run-up to the tournament, we have all witnessed the profound transformation that has taken place in the cities that will host AFCON 2021 matches. The preparation of the tournament has helped to accelerate the infrastructural development of many of our cities.” His remark certainly shines the greenlight on the benefits that the country hopes to gain from the competition.  
While counting on the economic benefits in the host cities and beyond are going to make from AFCON, the country has evidently achieved much in terms of roads, hotels, hospitals and other social amenities that will be useful to citizens long after AFCON. Health care services are some of the basic needs no government that is keen on ensuring the welfare of its population can afford to trifle with.     
Of course, as far as road infrastructure is concerned, many are familiar with the saying that wherever there is a road, development passes. It is therefore evident that localities where the road network has witnessed some improvement or the total construction of new roads thanks to the AFCON will in the days ahead find reasons to make good business.
