2021 AFCON : Outstanding Organization Skills To Remember

Despite all odds, the success of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon marked the year 2022.

The 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations was staged in Cameroon in January and February 2022. The competition was organised in 2022 after the competition was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The AFCCON tournament in Cameroon will forever be remembered thanks to its successful organisation. The Organisational skills of Cameroonian authorities and the legendary hospitality of Cameroonians leave much to write home about. However, the death of eight and wounding of 38 more in a stampede outside the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde on January 24, 2022 left an indelible mark on AFCON 2021 AFCON. The tournament was a massive success on several organisational fronts. Even out of Cameroon the competition was seen as the best AFCON ever because of its organisation. Even though the readiness of infrastructure was doubted by many due to late preparations the Local Organising Committee was able to meet the exigencies of CAF the start of the competition. By orgnising the competition the Head of State Paul Biya gave an opportunity for many young Cameroonians to have an idea of what happened in the country when Cameroon hosted the AFCON in 1972. 
The competition took place in six towns in Cameroon including Buea and Limbe in the South West Region which had security concerns. However, the security situation in the area was taken care of by the Cameroon military. All efforts by were made to prevent any attacks by the local militia. During the AFCON in Cameroon there was a record of stadium attendance. Thousands of football diehards in the South West Region thronged the Limbe Omnisports Stadium where matches were played despite the warning from armed groups banning the watching of games and attendance in the stadium. All the matches that were played in the stadium were full of spectators even though the Indomitable Lions were based in Yaounde.
