CHAN 2022 : Gloomy Atmosphere In Lions’ Den

Following Tuesday’s defeat, everything turned sour for the players and their fans given that Cameroon was tipped favourites in the competition.

The Intermediate Lions of Cameroon were knocked out of the seventh edition of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN 2022) after they were surprisingly beaten 1-0 by Niger in their last group E game on Tuesday January 24, 2023 at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran. The defeat came as a shock to the thousands of fans of the Lions who watched the match in Oran and even those in the country. On the day after the defeat, it was as if the Intermediate Lions were not in town. No noise was heard around. People were going about their daily chores and only few could talk about the ousting of the Lions and give some words of consolation to Cameroonian journalists. 
At the Vent-Dome-Khaled residence of the Intermediate Lions of Cameroon yesterday, it was a rather gloomy atmosphere. At the premises of the hotel Cameroonian fans were not seen hanging around to cheer the Lions as it was the case when Cameroon won their first game against Congo on January 16, 2023. The only Cameroonian who was at the hotel to visit the Lions was the Second Secretary at the Cameroon Embassy to Algeria, Vofo Martin. He was to encourage the Lions and to tell them all was not lost. At the restaurant, only some of the officials were seen taking breakfast. The players were not in the restaurant for breakfast. The tables set for the players were all empty.
