MTN Elite One : Coton Sport Tops Group A

The Garoua-based club won Renaissance 1-0 yesterday at the Ngoa-Ekelle Stadium to kick-off the return leg of the championship after an over one-month break.


The return leg of the 2022/2023 MTN Elite One Championship has kicked off in grand style after an over three-week break owing to the just-ended African Nations Championship (CHAN 2022) in Algeria. Coton Sport of Garoua overpowered Renaissance FC of Ngoumou 1-0 in an advanced day-12 game yesterday January 5, 2023 in Group A to mark the resumption. Several fans amongst high profile personalities like the President of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o thronged the Ngoa-Ekelle stadium to live the encounter.
The late first half strike from Ramses Donfack, fresh from the CHAN, took the defending champions to the top of Group A with 20 points. It was Donfack’s first goal for Coton Sport since the start of the championship. Contrary to expectations, Renaissance that is ninth on the classification table put up a laudable fight against the "almighty Coton " that had several players who defended the colours of Cameroon in Algeria. 
Knowing that passing through Coton's midfield could have been difficult, the boys from Ngoumou made use of the corners to threaten their opponents. Coton Sport equally constructed play to trouble Renaissance but laboured for some 42 minutes before Donfack was on time give them the lead leaving the first half at 1-0.
