CAF Champions League : Coton Sport In Tight Corner

The club recorded their third defeat when they were thrashed 3-0 by Egyptian side Al Ahly on Saturday March 4, 2023 in Cairo to remain bottom in Group B with zero points.

Cameroon’s representative at the ongoing group phase of the 2022-2023 CAF Champions League is currently on a hot seat after recording three back-to-back defeats this far. The Garoua-based club was thrashed 3-0 on Saturday March 4, 2023 in Cairo by Egyptian opponents Al Ahly in the delayed day 1 match in Group B. Goals from Mohamed Sherif, Ahmed Kendouci and Khalil Rafaat gave Al Ahly their first victory in this phase to take them to four points behind Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Al Hilal. Coton Sport stays bottom on the standings with zero points.
As early as the first minute of play and before Coton Sport could realise the game had started, the Egyptians opened scores through Sherif. Al Ahly pressed on knowing that they had to win to put their campaign on track. But the same enthusiasm was not seen in the Cotonites whose regular starting 11 had remarkable changes. The Cotonites rather seemed to be timid, stayed in their area of play and lacked the tact to move forward. Thus, Al Ahly had a superior ball possession and at each time, threatening the defence of the Cotonites. The pressure finally payed off five minutes to break when recently signed Kendouci finished off an assist from Ali Maaloul taking the lead to 2-0 at half time.
