Feast of Ramadan : Muslim Community Receives Telescopes

The instruments will help the Moon Commission to better view the sky before the start of the fasting period.


The confusion that use to surround the exact date when the Ramadan fasting period begins and ends in the country will soon be a thing of the past. Two months before the start of the Ramadan, the National Moon Crescent Commission (NMCC) has received three telescopes from the Cameroon Higher Council of Islamic Affairs. On hand to receive the telescopes on Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Tsinga Islamic Complex in Yaounde, was the Minister in Charge of Special Duties at the Presidency of the Republic, Hamadou Moustapha, who also doubles as an Honorary President of the NMCC.
Minister Hamadou Moustapha said they have had a lot of problems to establish the exact date to begin and end the Ramadan fasting period. “Different imams had different dates relating to the Ramadan period. This created confusion within Muslim faithful. We hope that with the availability of these telescopes, we will be able to know when Ramadan starts and ends. We are also going to have more precision on the Feast of the Ram,” he reiterated.
The President of the Cameroon Higher Council of Islamic Affairs, Al Cheikh Dr Abdoul Karim Abbo Yerima said the gift of telescopes will improve the work of NMCC, while ensuring excellence. Today, he said, they want science and faith to work together in ensuring equilibrium in development. According to Dr Abdoul Karim Abbo Yerima, they cannot pretend to be Muslims and do not use ICT tools.
