Sudanese Crisis: Khartoum, Juba At Loggerheads

The army under General Al Burhan is accusing their neighbours of supporting the Rapid Support Forces

Diplomatic tension is rising between Sudan and South Sudan following accusations by Khartoum that top Juba officials are tacitly providing support to the Rapid Support Forces (FSR). January 6, 2025 accusations came after Monday’s attacks against South Sudanese citizens by men wearing Sudanese army uniforms. RFI reports that, there are about 5,000 South Sudanese enrolled in the RSF, out of an estimated 100,000 fighters. The majority of the FSR fighters are said to have been recruited from Arab tribes in Darfur, from Chad and other countries in the region. Reacting to the accusations, South Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated in a press release the “neutrality” of South Sudan in the face of the Sudanese conflict. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement also recalled that up to date, some South Sudanese high-ranking military officials are fighting alongside the Sudanese army of General Al-Burhan. Juba authorities in the press release, “strongly condemn” what they say “is a false and dangerous assertion” and attempt by the Sudanese authorities to “diverting attention”.
