Ukraine-Russia Crisis : High-Stake Talks Resume In Jeddah

The talks come a few days after an aborted meeting between the US President Trump and his Ukraine counterpart Zelensky at the White House.
Top United States and Ukraine diplomates on Tuesday March 11, 2025 resumed talks in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The Ukrainian team was represented by Zelensky's head of office Andriy Yermak, the country's national security adviser and several foreign and defence ministers, while US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio represented the US delegation alongside National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. Speaking to the press while moving into the discussion room, a Ukraine top official said, the talks are more like “operation patch up” making up with Donald Trump and the White House after the public row in the Oval Office a couple of weeks ago.
During the meeting at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Jeddah, both parties discussed what are called “security protocols” and “territorial issues” which could translate as what America is willing to give Ukraine, as long it is willing to give up certain territories to Russia. BBC reports that until now, Ukraine has been very reluctant to go into specifics, but it has no choice but to engage in the talks because of Europe and Ukraine's continued reliance on America's military might. The issue of security guarantees is one of the key sticking points between the US and Ukraine. Kyiv has long said that any ceasefire or peace deal must be underpinned by US security guarantees because history shows that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not stick to agreements that don’t include them.
