Cameroon's Under-17 women's national football team, the Cadet Lionesses, took a significant step towards their third FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup appearance. This is thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kenya in the first leg of their third-round qualifier on Sunday, April 20, 2025, in Nairobi.
Having previously exited in the group stages of the 2016 and 2018 editions, the lone goal in the Kenyan capital has put Cameroon within touching distance of the global showpiece, scheduled to be hosted in Morocco later this year.
The encounter in Nairobi began with a lively tempo. Cameroon gradually grew into the match and created their own opportunities. At about the 25th minute of play, Cameroon found the breakthrough from a corner kick. Tiwa Melong Lys rose highest amidst a crowded penalty box, capitalizing on a misjudgement from Kenyan custodian Abwire Auma and her defenders to head the ball decisively into the net. The Cameroonian players erupted in celebration as they secured a crucial away goal.
