Advanced School of Mass Communication : From One To Five Departments

Since its creation, the institution keeps evolving in terms of teaching programmes and the enrolment of students.
Created in 1970 as l’Ecole Supérieure International de Journalisme de Yaounde (ESIJY), the Advanced School of Mass Communication (ASMAC) is today a beehive for those seeking knowledge in Journalism and Mass Communication. The institution which started with less than 60 student and administrative community today counts more than 1,500 students at the Ngoa-Nkelle campus. The school campus is today proving too small to accommodate the growing student population.
The Deputy Director of ASMAC, Professor Nta a Bitang, says after more than 50 years of existence, the institution more than ever is focused on professionalism in the training of students. With the high need for professional training, the school has evolved from training students only in Journalism at the post graduate to new fields such as Corporate Communication, Advertising, Information and Documentation sciences as well as Publishing and Graphic Arts. As an institution of higher learning attached to the University of Yaounde II with a duty to follow the Undergraduate, Masters and Doctorate System, the Deputy Director of ASMAC explained that the school has gone further to offer professional Master Programmes in different fields including Journalism, Corporate Communication and Marketing, Territorial Communication, Communication in Health and Environmental Sciences, Archiving and Documentary Engineering, Business Communication, Political Journalism as well as Strategic Communication in Peace, Emergence and Sustainable Development. Some 200-300 Master students are among the 1,500 students enrolled at the school.
