Same Story, Two Angles!

The outings of Communication Minister and Government’s Spokesperson, René Emmanuel Sadi, and Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education who doubles as Communication Secretary of the Central Committee of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) on the candidacy of incumbent President Paul Biya for the upcoming election has animated discussions within and without the country.
The interest shown in the interviews is obvious given the euphoria surrounding the imminent convening of the Electoral College for the 2025 Presidential election in October. With candidatures already made known by some political parties eligible to place aspirants for the country’s top job, it is but normal that citizens and keen observers of the country’s political game eagerly want to know how the ruling party is gearing up for the much-awaited polls.
In effect, their respective interviews on Radio France Internationale (RFI), seem to have been understood differently by different people. The styles were no doubt different, but the goal and message were the same. All converging on the support for the Head of State and party leader.
For instance, when Minister Sadi said, “The President of the Republic will make his decision when the time comes,” he was simply re-echoing what the Head of State said. For, President Paul Biya on July 26, 2022 during a joint press conference at the State House with visiting French President Emmanuel Macron made it loud and clear. While responding to a question from Amélie Tulet of RFI on whether or not he will seek re-election at the end of his current term of office, President Paul Biya said, “Cameroon as you know is governed in line with a Constitution. According to that Constitution, the mandate I have is for seven years. Try to calculate seven minus 4 or 3 and you will see how much time is still left for me to rule this country. When the term of office expires, you will be informed whether I will remain or go to the village.” This is certainly a fact from which Minister Sadi based his 50/50 argument.
As one of the kingpins of the ruling CPDM; having served as Secretary General of the Central Committee of the party, the Government’s Spokesperson outrightly allayed fears of any delay in making known the choice of the party.  “…We intend, as soon as possible, under the leadership of the National President, Paul Biya, to take decisions along these lines. The Head of State himself has hinted that, when the time comes, he will tell his militants, who have been calling on him throughout the year, in numerous appeals, whether or not he is a candidate. So this is not a situation that escapes us. I can tell you that, very soon, I believe that the CPDM will know the decision that will be taken by the President of the Republic.”
Minister of State, Fame Ndongo’s pronouncement on the unequivocal candidature of President Paul Biya is as well facts-based. ...
