Preventing, Addressing Sexual Exploitation : Exploring Innovative Mechanisms

Within the context of improving mechanism geared at protection the rights of children and girls from sexual abuse and exploitation, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, granted an audience to the Special Coordinator on improving the United Nations' response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Christian Saunders, in the course of which the two personalities exchanged ideas. The UN official is on a working visit in Cameroon and collaborates with member countries, through the international organisation, to improve the humanitarian response to sexual exploitation and abuse.  
Speaking to reporters after the audience, he stated that their actions include peacekeeping, development and humanitarian. “Sexual exploitation is common in every country. It is inevitable that it will be an issue in the United Nations. So we have to pay continuous attention. It was important for me to speak with the Minister about the different initiatives, within Cameroon, but also to ensure that the troops and the Gendarmerie who participate in UN peace keeping operations response correctly,” Christian Saunders stated, adding that their job is global and encompasses all UN agencies. He added that they are working to ensure that they have the necessary tools and mechanisms in place to ensure they prevent sexual abuse. In any case, Christian Saunders explained that they ensure they respond correctly to situations and the rights of the victims protected. “It is also making sure that those who commit such acts are held accountable and children who are results of sexual exploitation are properly looked after,” he said.
