2026 Women’s AFCON Cameroon Misses Out Again

Coach Jean Baptiste Bisseck must be the most disappointed and frustrated figure in Cameroonian football right now. Under his leadership, the senior women's national football team of Cameroon has missed the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) twice consecutively; a performance that has never happened in Cameroon’s women’s football history. The latest elimination came on October 28, 2025, at the Bepanda Reunification Stadium in Douala, following a 0-1 defeat to Algeria in the second leg of the last round qualifiers. Algeria had already dominated the first leg with a 2-1 victory in Oran, making it 3-1 on aggregate.
The team’s performance in yesterday’s match was underwhelming and lacked the urgency expected from a side fighting to avoid elimination. The away goal scored in Oran had presented a slim chance for the Lionesses, but they failed to capitalize in Douala. The first half was a painful ordeal, especially when Marine Dafeur scored for Algeria with a powerful shot from outside the penalty box, catching goalkeeper Michaely Bihina off guard. Bihina started in place of Ange Bawou, who played in the first leg. In effect, the multiple changes in the starting lineup made by Coach Bisseck compared to the team that played in Oran did not have the desired impact. Creativity was missing; the Lionesses struggled to keep possession and were limited in their attempts on goal.
