“The Entire Squad Deserves Praise”

Victor Osimhen, Striker, Nigeria.

You scored and made an assist in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in the AFCON quarterfinals; what does this performance mean to you?
Congratulations to the whole team for the performance we put in against a very strong Algerian side. I just did my job as a player. I fought for the team, aiming for goals or assists, and I am happy both came off in that quarterfinals match. I do not want to take the glory alone because the entire squad deserves the hype and praise. Once again, congratulations to every member of the team for the work we did against Algeria.

You are just a few goals away from Rashidi Yekini’s record for the Super Eagles; does that weigh on you every time you step onto the pitch?
Not at all. I have said it countless times: it does not matter if I equal or surpass the record. The late Rashidi Yekini remains the best striker the Super Eagles of Nigeria have ever produced. I just do my best for the team. I do not think it takes anything away from Yekini at all. I am giving my all. Of course, it is amazing to be part of the Super Eagles of Nigeria history. I just want to win something important for my country, and with my teammates' help, we are on that path.
