Fisheries Sector: Achievements And Future Plans

Board members of the Maritime Fisheries and Development Funds (CDPM) have outlined the accomplishments and future strategies to develop the fisheries sector in Cameroon. This was during the 70th Ordinary session of the board convened to evaluate activities carried out and those planned for the 2026 fiscal year. The board meeting was chaired by the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr. Taiga, who emphasized the fund’s critical involvement in emergency projects aimed at combating food insecurity, notably those supported by the World Bank. He also underscored the importance of numerous initiatives focused on empowering women and youth in the fishing sector. As board members looked ahead to fiscal year 2026, the Minister outlined plans to continue infrastructure development, particularly the construction of fish markets. “We will make efforts to assist vulnerable women in enhancing their roles in the fish market, demonstrating our commitment to community support”. Dr Taiga also mentioned training initiative as he cited the reopening of training centres for master fishermen, specifically the Bonamatoumbe and Debundscha Master Fishermen’s Centres, as a significant step in equipping young people with the skills necessary for success in the industry.
