Lent Rolls Out: Christians Derive Alternative Lenten Practices

As the season unfolds, some Christians have derived other means to commemorate the 40 days period.
As the season of Lent unfolds since Wednesday, 18 February 2026, many Christians are embracing a fresh perspective on this period of reflection and sacrifice. Traditionally marked by fasting and intensified prayer, this year, a growing number of individuals are opting to engage in personal activities that resonate more deeply with their individual spiritual journeys. Lent, which lasts for 40 days leading up to Easter, has historically encouraged believers to give up certain luxuries as a means of spiritual renewal. However, some Christians are challenging this norm by exploring meaningful alternatives. Activities range from offering different services in local communities. Madam Rosalie Djomfack said she has decided to engage in cleaning of the church house for the next 40 days. “Every day, I will go to the church early in the morning and clean a portion of the church before going to work. Despite my normal prayer routine during the lent season, I will be going to the church to clean” she mentioned. “By choosing to volunteer my time by cleaning the church, I feel I’m truly embodying the spirit of Lent and nurturing my own faith in the process” she added. Meanwhile, Sarah Udofa, a Christian in Douala, believes that Lent should be about personal growth and reflection, not just about giving something up. She said she has identified an orphanage where she will be visiting twice a week to assist in one way or the other.
