The Cameroonian capital is undergoing a facelift in readiness for the Papal visit from April 15-18, 2026.
As the countdown begins for the historic four-day apostolic visit to Cameroon of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the city of Yaounde has embarked on a massive aesthetic and structural transformation. Since Thursday, April 9, 2026, Cameroon’s capital has begun to wear a "new look," characterized by a flurry of administrative activities and street-level renovations designed to welcome the Leader of the Roman Catholic Church with the highest honors.
Diplomatic, Administrative Corridors
The transformation is most visible along the city’s primary diplomatic and administrative corridors. The stretch of road leading from the "Derrière Le Combattant" flyover, passing through the upscale "Nouvelle Route Bastos," and extending to the Sous-Prefecture in Tsinga, has been completely rebranded.
Commuters and residents have watched as municipal workers busily installed medium-sized lamp-post portraits. These street-level displays feature dual portraits of President Paul Biya and Pope Leo XIV side-by-side, while others feature the Pontiff alone, depicted in various liturgical regalia against the backdrop of iconic downtown Yaounde landmarks.
Welcome Messages
The messaging accompanying these decorations is one of national pride and spiritual blessing. In both French and English, billboards and street portraits carry slogans such as “Welcome To Cameroon, Land Of Hope,” and “May God Bless Cameroon.”
Official signage also confirms the Pontiff’s rigorous itinerary: “Apostolic Trip Of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV To Cameroon, Yaounde-Bamenda-Douala, 15-18 April 2026.”
Cementing Ties With Holy See
Beyond simple portraits, the city is cementing the legacy of the Catholic Church’s relationship with Cameroon through permanent nomenclature. Behind the Sous-Prefecture in Tsinga, on the road leading to the prestigious Yaounde Conference Centre, a new signboard has been unveiled recalling the stretch’s name, "Boulevard Saint Jean Paul II."
The sign features the image of the late Saint, serving as a reminder of the long-standing ties between the Vatican and the Central African nation.
Trimming, Painting, Cleaning
At the Unity Palace Roundabout, situated just below the slopes of Mont Fébé, the city’s symbolic giant lion statues are receiving a fresh coat of their signature milk-white paint. The surrounding infrastructure is also being meticulously manicured.
Up the winding tarmac of Mont Fébé, portions of the road have been partially blocked to accommodate maintenance crews. Workers on fork lifts, equipped with hacksaws, were seen trimming overgrown tree branches that hang over the route, while ground crews cleared the roadside of debris and overgrowth.

This specific focus on Mont Fébé is due to the hill’s role as the...
