Some 10 stations from seven regions received the equipment in Yaounde on May 3, 2026 as part of World Press Freedom celebrations.
This Sunday, May 3, 2026 as the 33rd World Press Freedom Day was celebrated, the event in Cameroon moved beyond rhetoric into the realm of tangible infrastructure. While the ears of media people and stakeholders echoed with the Minister of Communication’s calls for "Shaping a Future at Peace," the true pulse of the celebration was felt in 7 out of Cameroon’s 10 administrative regions.
As community radio station heads and local mayors stood alongside high-tech crates of digital transmitters and mixing consoles, it became clear that Cameroon has embarked on a massive technological overhaul of its rural information landscape.
A Connected Republic
In his official statement in the capital, Yaounde, René Emmanuel Sadi, the Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson, framed the donation as a critical component of national stability. He noted that while press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, its exercise in rural areas is often hampered by technical obsolescence.
The Minister underscored that the "future at peace" cannot be achieved if large swathes of the population remain in information "dark zones."
By strengthening the technical capacity of community radios, the government aims to allow local people to participate in the democratic process through reliable information. Provide a credible, high-quality signal that acts as an antidote to the "fake news" and "hate speech" often found on unregulated digital platforms. And support local councils in their mission to govern more effectively through clear communication.
Breaking The 50km Barrier
For Bassirou Dairou, the Head of Derken FM in Ngong, Benue Division of North Region, the arrival of the new equipment marks the end of a long period of communicative isolation. Historically, Derken FM was a localized broadcaster, struggling to reach beyond a 50 km radius. This limited range meant that many agrarian communities in Benue Division were left without a local voice to discuss farming techniques, health campaigns, or security updates.
“Today, with this 1000W transmitter and a high-quality mixer, we will cover more than 200 to 300 km,” Dairou announced. This expansion is not just a technical victory; it is a socio-economic one. By increasing its range sixfold, Derken FM can now reach nearly the entire North Region, providing a unified platform for a diverse population.
The Digital Mixer
The inclusion of a 16-channel digital audio mixing console (as specified in the Ministry's inventory) is critical for Dairou’s team. Unlike older analogue boards, these digital consoles allow for multi-source input, seamlessly blending field reports from Android phones with studio discussions. More so, the audio purity ensures that the expanded signal is crisp and professional, which builds listener trust.
Reviving The Pioneers Of Yokadouma
In the Boumba-Ngoko Division of the East Region, the story is one of heritage and resilience. Boumba FM radio station, established in 2003, holds the title of the first community radio in Cameroon. However, being a pioneer came with the burden of ageing equipment.
Decentralization Through Airwaves
Abono Ernest Timothée Mpoumbiel, the Mayor of Yokadouma Council, highlighted the deep link between media and local governance. He explained that the Yokadouma Council prioritized radio very early on as a tool for decentralization.
“The problem we had with the radio was mainly linked to the transmitter, which used to break down often,” the Mayor explained. These breakdowns were more than technical inconveniences; they were democratic interruptions that "deprived our people of the radio." With the Ministry's gift of a new, efficient digital transmitter, the Mayor believes communication will become "more lucid" for the "rear population" living far from the municipal center.
Rigobert Alondja’s Technical Strategy
Rigobert Alondja, Head of Boumba FM, detailed how the new 500-watt digital transmitter would be deployed. While the station already possesses a 2,000-watt unit, it is prone to failure due to harsh atmospheric conditions and energy fluctuations.
The new 500W transmitter will serve as a constant relay and backup and listeners will no longer experience signal drops. Alondja emphasized that this ensures "practically a non-stop coverage in all of Boumba-Ngoko Division." Similarly, the old signal is so robust that it is now regularly received in the Central African Republic and Congo Brazzaville, extending Cameroon’s cultural and informational soft power across its borders. Thus, the coming of a new digital transmitter will only boost this reach - perhaps go beyond.
The Equipment Inventory
The Ministry of Communication did not merely provide transmitters; they provided an entire ecosystem of modern broadcasting. The following breakdown explores the "total satisfaction" suite provided to these stations:
The 500W and 1000W digital transmitters are the "hearts" of the stations. Being digital, they offer higher energy efficiency and better signal-to-noise ratios than traditional FM transmitters. FM SL Dipole Antenna Systems, the 4x Antenna systems, constructed from high-grade aluminum, are designed to withstand the tropical weather of the East and North regions while maximizing the 2 Kw output capacity.
With 5 large-capsule studio microphones and high-quality monitoring headphones per station, the production value of local talk shows will increase significantly. The provision of Android phones and digital voice recorders recognizes that news happens in the field, not just the studio.
On the other hand, 2TB external hard drives and Core i5 10th generation computers ensure that community history is archived and that stations can handle the large file sizes associated with modern digital audio.
Power Resilience: The Silent Savior
Both Dairou and Alondja cited "energy problems" as a major hurdle. The Ministry addressed this by including 16 KVA Generators providing a reliable power source independent of the grid. While Voltage Regulators and UPS Units are essential for protecting the sensitive digital components of the new transmitters from power surges.
Socio-Cultural Impact
The ultimate goal of this technological surge is the happiness and engagement of the Cameroonian listener. Rigobert Alondja’s message to the listeners of Boumba FM was one of invitation: "I can only invite them to listen to the radio 24 hours a day, without interruption".
Bridging the Gap
Mayor Mpoumbiel noted that the council never had enough means to buy new devices as the old ones aged. The Ministry’s intervention has "strengthened" the municipality, allowing them to perform their duty of informing the public more effectively.
Cross-Border Communication
The fact that parts of the Kadey and Upper Nyong Divisions of East Region, as well as neighboring countries, can now hear the voice of Yokadouma clearly is a testament to the quality of the 500W and 1000W units. It turns local community stations into regional hubs of stability and mutual understanding.
