Senate President Aboubakary Abdoulaye opened the sitting on June 9, 2026 in Yaounde, calling on government to ensure timely funding for local governments to boost regional development.
The Cameroon Senate officially opened its Second Ordinary Session for the 2026 legislative year on June 9, 2026. With a solemn atmosphere of mourning and a resolute call for national unity, economic resilience, and local government empowerment by Senate President Aboubakary Abdoulaye.
Focus On Macro-Strategic Choices
With the crucial Budget Orientation Debate on the horizon, Abdoulaye firmly steered expectations away from localized politics. He emphasized that the debate must focus on macro-strategic choices rather than squabbling over localized infrastructure like village classrooms or water points.
He highlighted severe global economic headwinds, citing geopolitical conflicts, inflation, and rising international protectionism as key factors that Cameroon must navigate. For the 2027 budget, the Senate expects structural decisions targeting the high cost of living, healthcare coverage, education, and energy infrastructure.
SOS Against Corruption
Addressing Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, the Prime Minister and Head of Government directly, the Senate President concluded with an urgent appeal to curb corruption. Improve the business climate for the private sector, and decisively halt rising cases of femicide and unacceptable abuses occurring within schools. Furthermore, he demanded the timely disbursement of resources to regional and local authorities, reinforcing the Senate's constitutional mandate to champion decentralized development.
Exceptional Statesmen
The opening address, delivered by Senate President H.M. Aboubakary Abdoulaye, heavily reflected on a challenging legislative intersession dominated by the loss of several monumental political figures. The Senate observed a minute of silence for the late Marcel Niat Njifenji (the first President of the Senate, who passed away on April 11, 2026). Senator Chief Tabetando Ndieb Nso (Second Vice-President of the Senate), and the Honorable Cavaye Yeguie Djibril (former Speaker of the National Assembly). Abdoulaye hailed them as exceptional statesmen whose legacies must inspire future generations to preserve national cohesion.
They Threaten Social Fabric
Turning to national security and unity, the Senate President linked the session's objectives to the recent 54th National Unity Day and the historic April 2026 apostolic visit of Pope Leo XIV. Echoing the Pope’s message to "Remain United," Abdoulaye urged the government to aggressively combat regional, tribal, and religious divisions that threaten the country’s social fabric.
