Political Parties: Hitch-Free Transition Cases Abound

The situation of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), Cameroon Democratic Union (CDU) and the Cameroonian Party of Democrats (PDC) are some examples.

T ransition in a political party is an inevitable phase. Over the years, political parties experience the election of new leaders at the helm of the struc ture. In fact, the true definition of democracy is sometimes mea sured in the electoral phase of a new President at the helm of a political party. Some have ended in chaos, warranting the inter vention of State officials (the Mi nister of Territorial Administration) and institutions (competent ju dicial institutions), while others have simple experienced a pea ceful transition either after the death, resignation or expiry of mandate of the presiding leader. The Social Democratic Front (SDF), Cameroon Democratic Union (CDU) and the Cameroonian Party of Democrats (PDC) are some examples in which the transition has been more stable. SDF The Social Democratic Front is a center-left opposition political party in Cameroon that has conti nued to remain relevant on the political scene even after the death of one of its founders and first National Chairman, Ni John Fru Ndi, on June 12, 2023. In Oc tober of that same year, the party organised a two-day convention that led to the election of Joshua Osih as the National Chairman. Since then, the new leadership of the party has continuously strived to maintain the party’s position as the main opposition party in the country. It participa ted in the October 2025 Presi dential election and has already begun preparations for the up coming legislative and municipal elections. The present National Chairman has organised several National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings to improve the life of the party, with the last being held on October 31, 2026. CDU It was founded on April 26, 1991, by Adamou Ndam Njoya who was a prominent Cameroonian intel lectual and diplomat who served Cameroon in various positions. It is one of the political parties in Cameroon that emerged after the re-introduction of multiparty politics. Political observers hold that the party faced its most si gnificant transition following the death of its founder, Adamou Ndam Njoya, in March 2020. It is presently headed by Patricia To maïno Ndam Njoya, who was elected as the National President of the party. She has sustained the party's strong local foothold in Foumban, serving as the Mayor of the muncipality and continuing the CDU's legacy of decentrali sation advocacy and opposition representation in the National Assembly and local municipal au thorities. PDC The Cameroonian Party of De mocrats was originally founded by André-Marie Mbida, the first pre-independence Prime Minister of Cameroon. Since creation, i...
