Digital Education: Maiden Smart Classroom Goes Operational

Situated at the General Leclerc High School, it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute yesterday, March 3, 2026.
At the behest of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute, yesterday March 3, 2026 commissioned the smart classroom of the General Leclerc High School, a first of its kind in the educational system of the country. The solid steel building that is powered by 60 solar panels, which can function even when traditional infrastructure is limited, is fruit of the Cameroon-Commonwealth cooperation. In a more simplified manner, it is a free-of-charge donation from the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) with Promethean as implementing partner. This explains why the inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of the Chairman of the Council, Lord Jonathan Marland. The structure embodies the new model of education as everything in the classroom is digital oriented with teachers using smart blackboards and learning from a smart tablet. And the goal is to facilitate the integration of digitalisation in public administration as it better equips students with the skills of meeting up with the technological demands of the changing world. The Prime Minister who attended one of the classes after its inauguration noted that the innovation is inspiring and technology has the underlying potential to reshape the community. To him, it is a concrete manifestation of the digital policy of the Head of State and marks a milestone in the digitalisation of the educational system. While noting that the project would build resilience in the educational sector, Joseph Dion Ngute said it is tailored in such a way to be equally operational in rural areas, without the need of the internet and expensive electrical appliances. The Head of Government urged the Minister of Secondary Education to ensure that the precious training tool fulfills its mission and guarantees its upkeep. He also used the opportunity to express the appreciation of government to the Commonwealth. According to the Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Nalova Lyonga, there are prospects of implementing smart classrooms in the North West and East Regions, after the Centre Region.
