Mythical Clubs: Fading Glory!

Once-dominant forces like Canon, Union Douala, Dynamo, Racing, TKC, etc., have vanished from the trophy scene, now barely clinging to survival in Cameroon's professional leagues

Those who followed local football several decades ago cannot help but ponder what has befallen some venerated clubs that once fascinated crowds in the elite championship and Cup of Cameroon. Legendary clubs like Canon sportif of Yaounde, Union of Douala, Dynamo of Douala, Racing of Bafoussam, amongst others that once made the football landscape tremble by winning several championship and Cup of Cameroon titles have become shadows of themselves. For so many years now, these clubs have been far away from the trophy and are barely surviving in their respective leagues. In the Littoral Region, for example, clubs like Union and Dynamo were cherished patrimonies of the people. Their triumphs in the championship and Cup of Cameroon dominated regional conversation. Today, these powerhouses remain distant from silverware; Union of Douala, after years of shaking the league, was relegated from Elite One to the second division. The club claimed its fifth and last title in the elite one in the 2011-2012 season, with nothing added since. Union are currently relegation-threatened in the Elite Two championship. In Yaounde, Canon and TKC stood as undisputed stars; die-hard Cameroonians could name each player, thanks to their determination, which made them win several trophies, flying the nation's flag high even internationally. Canon Yaounde ranks second in league titles with 10, but their last championship came in 2002; 24 arid years without another crown. They lead the Cup of Cameroon with 12 trophies, though the most recent dates to 1999. Several years have passed, and Canon has not added any other crown to its cabinet. TKC lifted the league crown five times together with five Cups of Cameroon, the last in 1991 and their cabinet has gathered dust ever since.
