Echoes Of Lake Nyos: Safety, Nostalgic Memories 40 Years After Deadly Gas Leak

Four decades after the catastrophic limnic eruption at Lake Nyos in Menchum Division of Cameroon’s North West Region claimed over 1,700 lives on August 21, 1986, the survivors, their descendants, and local administrators continue to navigate the complex realities of long-term displacement. In an exclusive phone interview with Cameroon Tribune Online, the Senior Divisional Officer, SDO for Menchum Division, Abdoulahi Aliou, provided a comprehensive update. Across Seven Resettlement Camps

Following the 1986 toxic carbon dioxide release, the Cameroonian government established seven main resettlement camps across two administrative divisions to accommodate thousands of displaced survivors. Menchum Division hosts five primary camps, notably Yemge, Esu, Upkwa, Ipalim, Kumfutu, and Kimbi. While neighbouring Boyo Division hosts two camps in Subum and Buabua.

Four Decades On  

Forty years on, demographic shifts have fundamentally transformed these communities. SDO Abdoulahi Aliou pointed out that an entire generation born and raised within the camps knows no other home, having fully integrated into their new environments. Conversely, older survivors continue to harbour a deep, nostalgic desire to return to their ancestral lands and reconnect with traditional roots.

Continuous State Efforts

While the State continues to dispatch periodic financial aid, material support, and food relief, expanding family sizes have placed increased pressure on local resources, prompting demands for greater state assistance, the SDO said. Despite these challenges, several camps have evolved into permanent settlements.

In Ukpwa - situated just 7 kilometers from Wum – the Menchum divisional headquarters - government has installed solar power systems, primary and secondary schools, health centres. And is preparing to establish a new Gendarmerie post.

Controlled Farming

Although formal administrative authorization for permanent, full-scale resettlement at the immediate lake basin remains restricted out of caution, agricultural and pastoral activities have resumed, the SDO pointed out. He said local farmers routinely return to the fertile soils of Nyos village - a recognized Third Class chiefdom - during the rainy season to cultivate crops. Similarly, Fulani herders utilize the area's lush pastures and abundant water sources to graze livestock.

Lake Stability, Remote Telemetry

Administrative caution is balanced by continuous technical monitoring of the lake. Abdoulahi Aliou said Lake Nyos maintains a maximum depth of 210 meters at its center.
