United Nation’s 81st Anniversary: Cameroon Celebrates Strides

S aturday October 24, 2026 was the 81st anniversary of the United Nations, a global intergovernmental organiza­ tion founded on October 24, 1945, to maintain international peace and security, pro­ tect human rights, deliver humanitarian aid, and promote sustainable development. To this effect, official commemorative activities are planned today October 26 at the Ministry of External Relations to be chaired by Minister Mbella Mbella. Besides the commemoration of this day, Ca­ meroon is also celebrating strides recorded within the international organisation as well as achievements in collaboration with the or­ ganisation. Cameroon, it should be recalled, joined the United Nations as member on September 20, 1960, and has since then made constant efforts to promote democratic values as in­ carnated by the institution’s Charter. Over the years, cooperation between both parties have evolved with the participation of Cameroon in the life of the Organisation significant. There have been visits of high ranking UN officials to Cameroon, the placement of Cameroonians at the helm of various UN organs, the role of Cameroon in the peace and security framework of the organisation, and, the role of UN systems in the development efforts of Cameroon. Indeed, history will always remember that a Cameroonian, in the person of Philemon Yang, former Prime Minister, served as President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
