Economic Development: Relevance Of Urbanisation Highlighted

T he concept of urbanisation in the economic develop­ ment of a nation came under discussion yesterday at the Ministry of External Relations. This was during an audience the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu granted to Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Anaclaudia Rossbach, yesterday September 7, 2026. The senior official of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN- Habitat) is on a three-day working visit in Cameroon, meeting with of­ ficials and exchanging views on hou­ sing and urban development. After an audience at the Ministry of External Relations, she told the press that it was more of an exchange on the importance of investing in sec­ tors like housing and urban infra­ structure. “They are an industry in itself for the creation of jobs, eco­ nomic opportunities, for the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but also to promote local economic de­ velopment and how in doing that you can match social and climate needs to economic growth and de­ velopment,” the UN top official sta­ ted. She added that they also discussed the pertinence of closely examining cities and urbanisation when ad­ dressing the challenges of climate change.
