Cameroon-Nigeria Relations : Joint Cross River-Bridge Commissioning Today

The FCFA 21.2 billion facility is intended to cement the peaceful settlement of the Bakassi feud.

Today augurs a blue sky for Cameroon and Nigeria relation with the commissioning of a 403-linear metre bridge over the Cross River to link both countries. The bridge was constructed between 2017 and 2021. Cameroon’s Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, as envoy of President Paul Biya will meet President Muhammadu Buhari’s emissary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to cut the inaugural ribbon over the border bridge this 3 November, 2022. The acting personalities are heading delegations from the two countries on that assignment to benefit an estimated 238 million population from both countries, Cameroon (27 million) and Nigeria (211 million). Profits to flow from the event include eased trade, cultural exchanges, transportation, socialisation, tourism, education, health, diplomacy and other development exploits.
The event marks the fulfilment of the Greentree Accord in New York (USA) signed on 12 June, 2006 by Cameroon and Nigeria Heads of State, respectively Paul Biya and, at the time, Olusegun Obasanjo. The Agreement was to define peaceful conditions to execute a complete transfer of authority from Nigeria to Cameroon over the disputed Bakassi Peninsula. By that diplomatic covenant, the bridge over the Cross River became an imperative to realise fluid transportation between Bamenda (Cameroon) and Enugu (Nigeria). 
The official commissioning of the CFA 21,132,005.805 facility today will mark the culmination of a peaceful ending of differences over Bakassi. Funding of the Cross River bridge project was ensured by the African Development Bank as a loan to Cameroon and Nigeri...
