France : Corruption Case Against Sarkozy Afoot

On Monday, Asaif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of ex Libyan leader reiterated that his 2007 election campaign was financed by Tripoli.

 

Asaif Al-Islam Gaddafi has confirmed accusations levied on the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. At the ongoing trial in Paris (France) that began on January 20, 2025, Mr Sarkozy is accused of receiving millions of euros of illicit funds from the late Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi to finance his 2007 election campaign. In exchange, the prosecution alleges Sarkozy promised to help Gaddafi combat his reputation as a pariah with Western countries and the liberation of a Libyan spy chief, Abdullah al-Senussi, sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment by a French court in 1999 for his role in the 1989 bombing of a UTA passenger plane over Niger which killed 170 people.
During an interview granted the French radio RFI on Monday, the son of the ex-Libyan leader reiterated what he said in 2011 to Euronews, two years before the opening of investigations. “Sarkozy has to give back the money he accepted from Libya to finance his electoral campaign. We financed his campaign and we have the proof … The first thing we’re demanding is that this clown gives back the money to the Libyan people.” Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine who acted as a middleman between France and the Middle East said, he had written proof that Sarkozy's campaign bid was “abundantly” financed by Tripoli, and that the €50m worth of payments continued after he became Preside...
