Yango in Cameroon: driving impact and transforming mobility through innovation with a new 5-year license

Good morning, Dr. Pilla. To start, could you briefly introduce Yango for those who may not be familiar with the company?

Good morning, and thank you for having me. Yango is an international technology company that leverages global innovations to provide everyday services tailored to local markets. We operate in more than 30 countries, offering e-services such as: ride-hailing, parcel delivery, fintech solutions, and more. In Cameroon, we launched in 2021, and since then, we’ve transformed urban mobility in Douala and Yaoundé, offering a transparent, safe, and efficient transport solution.

How would you describe Yango's impact on the local economy so far?

Our presence has strongly contributed significantly to the local economy. We’ve created and contributed to the creation of over 6 000 direct and indirect jobs. In addition, over 150 Cameroonian transportation companies partner with us, generating even more indirect job opportunities. Yango is not just a ride-hailing platform; we’re a key player in the country’s digital and economic development.

You mentioned Yango’s role in the local economy. How does the company work with the Cameroonian government, and how does this collaboration influence your operations?

Our collaboration with the Cameroonian government is constant and we are deeply committed to contributing to a safe and regulated environment as the transport sector evolves and digitizes. Indeed, in collaboration with one of our partners, we recently renewed  a 5-year license and authorization from the Ministry of Transport. We appreciate the government’s support in fostering a stable business climate and will continue working closely with the public sector  to align our services with national transportation and digital policies.

Looking at the long term, how is Yango investing in Cameroon?

We are committed to strengthening Cameroon’s mobility ecosystem through technology and investment. Our focus includes advancing our platform, expanding and renewing fleets, and enhancing driver training. We also prioritize local talent development to support the country’s growing digital economy. This quarter, we plan to expand to Bafoussam, improving access to safe and reliable mobility technology. Additionally, investments in fleet renewal and safety initiatives will enhance urban mobility, and contribute to creating jobs.

How is Yango performing in Cameroon in terms of business growth?

We are proud of our performance since launching in Cameroon. With over 150,000 monthly active users, our platform is growing steadily. Cameroonians have embraced our services, and we are continuously working on enhancing our offerings to better serve our customers and partners. Generally speaking, we've made a real contribution to transforming the use of transport, digitizing the sector and offering Cameroonians a safe, reliable and comfortable service.

Safety remains a major concern in the ride-hailing industry. What measures has Yango implemented to enhance security for both drivers and users?

Safety is one of our top priorities. We have introduced some key safety features, including an SOS button with direct access to authorities, an emergency chat with our support team, and a ‘share-route’ function that allows users to share trip details with trusted contacts. Partners’ drivers undergo rigorous document checks, and passengers can see the driver’s details, including ratings and vehicle information, before starting a ride. Additionally, we have implemented security alerts for drivers regarding high-risk areas, giving them the option to accept or decline trips based on safety considerations.

Finally, as the Country Manager of Yango in Cameroon, what is your vision for the company over the next few years?

My vision is for Yango to become a household name in Cameroon by providing value through our services that make the lives of city dwellers better. We are the leading ride-hailing platform in Cameroon; setting the standard for safety, efficiency, and innovation. Over the next five years, we aim to expand to more cities, introduce new services, and further integrate digital financial solutions. By continuously improving our platform and investing in local talent, we hope to contribute to Cameroon’s digital transformation and economic growth.

Thank you for sharing these insights, Dr. Pilla. We look forward to seeing how Yango continues to evolve in Cameroon.

Thank you. It was a pleasure speaking with you.
