Since the start of the civil war in Sudan, there has been many calls for both sides to dialogue. While the calls have failed to yield any dividends, civilians continue to be the major victims of the crisis. A case in point is the recent killing of hundreds civilians in the capital Khartoum by yet-to-be identified gunmen. Though the extra-judicial killings are said to be ethnically or politically motivated, UN Office of the High Commission for Human Rights, have called for an immediate opening of an independent, transparent investigations in line with international standards in order to punish those involved.
It is true that it’s not the first time such calls are been made since the start of the civil war, but this time around, the entire world is expecting much from the main stakeholders. After condemnation, it is time for a strong back-up from the international community in order to not only deter militias or soldiers from both warring parties to stop carrying out the abuses on innocent women and children, but to also drop their arms.
