Evaluating Bilingualism : Commission Visits Douala

The members will evaluate the practice of bilingualism and the fight against hate speech within the education sector.

The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism is in Douala for a three-day mission to evaluate the promotion of bilingualism and to sensitise the educational family on the fight against hate speech. For three days, the members of the Commission will visit some secondary and primary schools in the city of Douala.  The mission, led by Ama Tutu Muna, a member of the Commission, began its tour on Monday 28 April with a stopover at the Littoral Governor's Office, where they were received by the Secretary General, Aboubakary Haman Tchiouto.
The SG reiterated government's commitment to ensuring that every institution in the region respects and promotes bilingualism.
While at the Commission's regional antenna in the region, the delegation met with education stakeholders in the region where they shared experiences and challenges faced in promoting bilingualism within the education system. They also identified some possible solutions. For his part, Commission member George Ngwane presented portions of the Constitution that emphasises the promotion of bilingualism. He mentioned the fact that both languages must be treated equally, which is why posters for government services must have the same font size and type in both languages. He emphasised that it was important to give equal value to both languages as this would go a long way in promoting national cohesion and co-existence.
