Serenity During Election : Challenges Awaiting Regional Governors

Regional Governors begin meeting today July 15, 2025 in Yaounde for their first bi-annual conference which will be chaired by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji. Deliberations at the two-day get together will evolve on the theme, “The Challenges of Maintaining Law and Order During the Election Period: Ensuring a Credible, Fair and Peaceful Presidential Election.”
As administrative leaders of regions, Governors have the duty of maintaining law and order, protecting property and ensuring that activities go unperturbed in their respective command areas. With the election of the President of the Republic slated for October 12, 2025, it is imperative for serenity to be maintained throughout the entire electoral process, as highlighted by the theme of the bi-annual conference. Given that elections usually spark tensions due to mounting and sometimes uncontrolled emotions, maintaining law and order before, during and after the election is of utmost importance. Meetings will be held and rallies organised by political parties, as well as other stakeholders, definitely only after the authorisation of the Divisional Officer, under the supervision of the Governor. It would thus be their duty to ensure that such gatherings do not pose a threat to social peace. While they will be working at safeguarding the democratic process, it would also be paramount for the regional administrators to draw the line between guaranteeing freedom of expression and tolerating cacophony.
