Bilingualism In Schools: Towards More Effective Practice

Members of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism in an evaluation mission in Bamenda are getting proposals intended to improve the policy
The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism has set out to ensure a more effective implementation of the bilingualism policy in nursery, primary and secondary schools through the effective use of English and French that are Cameroon’s two official languages with equal status. While promoting the bilingualism policy the commission has equally set out to build the culture of the fight against hate speech and xenophobia in the same educational sectors.
The Commission’s evaluation team to the North West Regional capital Bamenda will return to its head office in Yaounde having shared information on the law on the promotion of the use of the country’s two official languages, provisions of the Penal Code on hate speech and xenophobia, and more importantly proposals from the region’s education stakeholders on how to attain effectiveness. The mission was led by Ngambo Fondjo Pierre Vincent and Jean Marc Afesi Mbafor as member. On the start of their mission on Monday, November 17, 2025, they paid a courtesy call on North West Regional Governor, Adolphe Lele Lafrique and had in-camera discussions with him.
The pertinent part of the mission was the working session with North West Basic and Secondary Education officials at the Regional Delegation of Secondary Education still on Monday.
