Of Social Protection: That Encapsulates Rights Of Persons With Disabilities
The Christian Blind Mission, CBM hosted an impactful workshop in Yaounde from November 25-26, 2025 to advance understanding among journalists.
As one of four pilot Christian Blind Mission, CBM project countries worldwide - alongside Kenya, Jordan, and Guatemala - Cameroon is at the forefront of embedding disability inclusive practices within social protection frameworks. Melissa Longla, Programme Officer for Social Protection at CBM Cameroon, emphasized the importance of the media in shaping public discourse around disability issues. During the workshop on Disability Inclusive Social Protection, DISP that held in Yaounde from November 25-26, 2025.
Filling Up Missing Links
“There was noticeable enthusiasm surrounding Disability Inclusive Social Protection upon its launch in Cameroon in August 2025. However, we noticed a significant knowledge gap in how this crucial concept was perceived,” she stated. “Our goal was to equip media representatives with a comprehensive understanding to effectively disseminate the right messages about DISP.”
Accurate, Dignified Reportage
The workshop not only brought together journalists, but also communications professionals from CBM's partner organizations, creating a collaborative environment to promote accurate and dignified reporting on disability issues. A panel discussion featuring representatives from the Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, and the Inclusive Society for Persons with Disabilities further illuminated the government's role and ongoing challenges in implementing social protection for this vulnerable population.
High Invalidity Risks
Onana Raymond, representing the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, conveyed the timely importance of the workshop. He acknowledged the necessity of collaboration among government entities and NGOs like CBM to combat stigmatization and ensure effective social protection measures. “Social protection policies must consider all individuals, particularly those at risk of becoming invalid due to unforeseen circumstances,” he explained.
It Concerns Them Most
Kemegne Kouam Theophile, Secretary General of the Inclusive Society for Persons with Disabilities Centre Regional chapter, echoed the same message: “Social protection is essential for people with disabilities as they face heightened vulnerabilities. Our participation was a commitment to advocate their rights and needs,” he remarked.
