Partial Results Known

Winners of the November 30 polls in some regions have been made public and the by midnight today, all the results will be known.

Results of the election of regional councillors that took place on November 30 have already been published in some regions by the regional supervisory commissions. As at yesterday, the winners of the polls, both divisional delegates representing political parties and traditional rulers, in the Littoral, North, South West, South and Adamawa Region had been known. Those of the other regions are expected to be published today. The publication of these results is in accordance with the provisions of Section 265 of the Electoral Code which state that results are proclaimed within 72 hours after the close of the polls. The said results were proclaimed by regional supervisory commissions after centralising and verifying vote-counting operations forwarded by local polling commissions. Voting took place last Sunday and counting 72 hours after the close of the polls, the deadline falls today at midnight. “The regional supervisory commission shall proclaim the results of the election of regional councillors at the level of the constituency concerned, within 72 hours following the close of the poll,” states the aforementioned legal disposition. Thus, by midnight today, the results across the ten regions will be known. This then gives room for post-electoral petitions. Nevertheless, regional councillors whose election is challenged shall remain in office pending a final decision.
The following day after the polls, various supervisory commissions were already meeting in the ten regions, centralising and verifying vote-counting operations, on the basis of reports forwarded by local polling commissions. All this was in an effort to ensure all the results are published within the stipulated deadline, especially given that there are other legal procedures to be respected after the proclamation of the results before the elected officials actually begin work.
