International Labour Day: Social Dialogue Under Scrutiny

This was during a debate that took place on April 28 in Douala.
Social dialogue has been described as a way to ensure quality productivity at the work place. This was during a conference organised by the sub commission of communication, conference and debate of the 140 edition of the International Labour Day. The conference that took place to mark the International Labour Day brought together stakeholders around the national theme focused on the role of social dialogue in strengthening national cohesion, maintaining peace, and supporting economic development. During the conference on April 28, the different panellists emphasized that, workers and social partners must engage actively with employers as dialogue should be continuous, structured, and productive rather than limited to occasional meetings. Participants also noted that the government of Cameroon has established a framework designed to protect workers’ rights and ensure their social coverage. This framework, according to the discussion, creates opportunities for open and free communication between employers and employees, allowing workers to clearly express their concerns and expectations. At the same time, employers are expected to explain their goals and what they require from employees in order for the company to grow steadily and sustainably. Panellists also talked on the value of a peaceful social environment. When social relations are calm and stable, employers benefit from stronger collaboration that cuts across ethnic lines.
