Jakiri Veterinary Training Centre : New Director Outlines Plans To Upgrade Infrastructure, Raise Enrolment

Dr Nfor, Mohamadou Bawe also intends to boost morale and understanding amongst staff and trainees.

Following the handover ceremony of May 22, 2026, Dr Nfor, Mohamadou Bawe, the newly appointed Director of the National Center for Zootechnical and Veterinary Training, CNFZV, Jakiri, Bui Division in the North West Region, has officially taken the helm. Outlining a rigorous roadmap to restore the academic prestige of Cameroon’s oldest veterinary training institution.

Entirely Unexpected
The appointment, which was decreed by Head of State President Paul Biya on May 15, 2026, caught Dr Bawe by surprise. Coming at a time when many Cameroonians were closely anticipating other major state appointments, the Director noted that while his own elevation was "long overdue," it was entirely unexpected.
The transition of power from outgoing Director Dr. Atanga Heinandez took place in the North West Regional Governor’s office in Bamenda, presided by the Secretary-General, Sadouna Ali. The ceremony was described as a conducive and history-making atmosphere.

Reversing "Fallen Standards"
Now two weeks into his tenure, Dr Nfor Mohamadou has already identified critical internal friction points that require immediate intervention. Chief among his concerns is a perceived decline in the moral, academic, and pedagogical standards of the institution.
"The teaching staff's weariness and lack of seriousness in their responsibilities is a major concern," the Director stated, emphasizing the urgent need to rebuild a culture of accountability. His immediate focus centers on establishing an atmosphere of mutual understanding among the trainees, staff, and the host population to foster a better learning environment.

Shadow Of Crisis, Shrinking Enrolment
The ongoing socio-political crisis in the region continues to cast a long shadow over CNFZV Jakiri. Currently operating in Bamenda in Mezam Division - away from its original site in Jakiri, Bui Division - the school's operational effectiveness has been heavily compromised. Particularly regarding practical, hands-on zootechnical courses.
The instability has also triggered a severe drop in enrolment. A school that boasted a robust population of 840 students before the crisis has seen its numbers plummet by nearly 65%, currently standing at just 298 students.

Degraded Infrastructure
Compounding these operational hurdles is a severely degraded infrastructure. Founded in 1941, CNFZV Jakiri is the oldest veterinary training school in the country. Yet its physical infrastructure does not reflect that legacy. Dr Bawe noted that a primary hurdle ahead will be the complete rehabilitation of the school, starting with the construction of a modern administrative block worthy of its historical status.

Milestone For Donga Mantung
Beyond the administrative hurdles, the appointment carries immense cultural and regional significance. Dr Nfor, Mohamadou Bawe is the first-ever elite from Donga Mantung Division - and the first Wimbum man - to lead the institution since its inception 85 years ago.

Animal Husbandry Plateau
Hailing from the Nkambe Plateau, a region where livestock breeding and animal husbandry form the backbone of the local economy, Dr Bawe views his position as a divine and presidential endorsement to empower local youth.
He expressed a specific desire to see an influx of youth, particularly young women, enrolling in livestock and veterinary programmes starting in October 2026. Leveraging regional assets like the Dumbo Cattle Ranch in Donga Mantung Division.

Appreciation
The new Director expressed profound gratitude to President Paul Biya for the trust bestowed upon him via the presidential decree. And extended heartfelt appreciation to his wife and children for their unwavering support as he takes on this challenging State responsibility.
