For the proper management of waste, the government should consider exploring organised and structured schemes.
Generally, developing countries face challenges in the collection and management of waste. The situation of Cameroon is not different. This is why there is need for proper planning of waste management from its generation to disposal. Formal waste management systems prioritise proper disposal and recycling, minimising environmental pollution and health risks associated with informal waste management practices.
Organising the system while applying a hybrid waste management model that incorporates elements of public-private partnerships, integrated waste management strategies, and community engagement will go a long way to ease waste management in the country. The government needs to know which model to use. Is it the Circular Economy Model approach which focuses on reducing waste generation, promoting recycling, and recovering value from waste? Or an Improved Public-Private Partnerships through the reduction of informal sector risks by providing structured waste collection and disposal services which will reduce the risks and challenges faced by informal waste collectors. Whatever method to be used, the end results should promote a safer and more sustainable waste management environment.
There is need for the community to be engaged and educated on waste management. Experts indicate that engaging local communities in waste management decision-making and providing education on proper waste disposal practices can increase awareness and encourage responsible behaviour. As such, th...
